You are cordially invited to celebrate Bryce Canyon's thrilling Night Life! Check your calendar and join us for these uniquely-Bryce experiences. During full moons, (1-2 consecutive nights each month), when the mix of shadows and moonlight cause the hoodoos to take on spooky personalities, we offer 1-2 mile-long moonlit hikes. These hikes descend down into the canyon along steep and rocky trails. Due to the nature of this special activity all participants must agree to the following rules.

RULES:
Children under age 6 are not permitted.
Hiking boots or hiking shoes (lug soles) are required for your safety and the safety of the Park Staff and other Participant(s).
Flashlights, headlamps are not allowed. Flash photography may be permitted under key restrictions.
Bring drinking water and a jacket - nightime temperatures can be cold.
Due to steep and rocky trails this activity is not wheelchair accessible.

NOTE: The number of visitors we can accommodate on our Full Moon Hikes is limited for safety reasons. Tickets for the Full Moon Hike will be distributed via lottery on the day of the hike and each person in your family or group must be present (with the hiking shoes/boots they plan to wear!), however, only one person per group needs to hold a winning number. Each person in your family or group should take a number to increase the chance of obtaining a ticket to join the hike. There is a strict limit of EIGHT (8) participants per winning lottery number. The lottery will be held in the Bryce Canyon Lodge Auditorium at precisely 3:00 pm MDT; lottery number distribution will begin at 2:30 p.m. MDT and no tickets will be distributed once the lottery begins - please do not arrive at the Lodge prior to 2:30 pm.

For the first time since it was founded, Bryce Canyon National Park will have lodging available inside the park during the winter months.

The National Park Service approved a pilot program that will allow up to 35 motel rooms to remain open throughout the 2015-2016 winter season, according to the Bryce Canyon National Park website. While historic Ruby's Inn and other nearby hotels outside the park typically remain open during the winter months, the Bryce Canyon Lodge and other lodging facilities inside the park have previously been closed from November to March.

Several trails closed in Bryce Canyon National Park due to dangerous conditions

Dangerous conditions have forced the closure of several trails in Bryce Canyon National Park.
The Wall Street section of Navajo Loop is closed due to falling rock and treacherous, icy switchbacks, park officials said.
The connecting trail from Bryce Point to Peekaboo Loop is also closed. The Peekaboo Loop is open but must be accessed from Sunset or Sunrise points.
The rim trail between Bryce Point and Inspiration Point is also closed for the season.
The trails will reopen in late spring.

Historic Ruby’s Inn turns 100 this year

It's a happy 100th as well for Ruby's Inn.
In May 1916, Reuben (Ruby) and Minnie Syrett settled a homestead near Bryce Canyon not knowing the wonders that lay in their own backyard.

Southern Utah is going back in time for its fourth annual “Bryce Canyon Fly-in and Car Show.” The show is an opportunity for families, travelers, car enthusiasts and airplane lovers to have an exciting day of adventure in Bryce Canyon Country.
This year’s event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Bryce Canyon Airport, located at 450 N. Airport Road in Bryce Canyon City.
“So far, the ‘Fly-in and Car Show’ has been successful,” Greg Pollock, Bryce Canyon airport manager, said. “It usually takes five to 10 years before large crowds of people start to come, but a lot of people have come the past two years. One year, we ran out of food because we only expected about 150 people to show up. Luckily, Ruby’s Inn is close and helped us out.”
Registration and check-in for cars and planes starts at 8 a.m. Saturday. At 10 a.m., visitors will be able to attend the airport open house, view the historic warbirds, watch the static plane displays and observe the car show. The warbirds include planes from World War II and the Korean War, and the pilots will be available to answer questions.
Later in the day, from noon to 2 p.m., attendees can purchase a pulled pork lunch to support the Tropic Scout Troop. At 3 p.m., trophies for the car show winners will be awarded. Admission to the Fly-in and Car Show is free to the public.
The event also includes a raffle giveaway and prizes. Prizes include a helicopter tour over Bryce Canyon National Park, camping chairs, camping backpacks and more. Proceeds from the raffle go toward putting on the show.
Pollock said the second year of the event brought 600-800 people.
“We hope the show will not only continue to grow and bring attention to the airport from local areas, but also nationally,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is to have enough people fly in, enter cars and attend the event to help the economy in our area.”
The Bryce Canyon Fly-in and Car Show coincides with the weekend of the National Park Service’s birthday, so those in attendance can receive free admission to Bryce Canyon National Park Friday and then head over to the Fly-in and Car Show Saturday.

Springtime hours, construction coming to Bryce Canyon

With its busy season right around the corner, Bryce Canyon National Park is extending it hours and warning visitors of upcoming construction projects.

Things to know about the 2018 season:

Visitor info: The visitor center and bookstore, which open their doors at 8 a.m., will stay open until 6 p.m. starting April 1 and then until 8 p.m. starting April 29. Ranger programs, including daily geology talks and rim walks, as well as popular astronomy programs, are on the schedule. An Astronomy Festival is set for June 13-16, and a Geology Festival from July 27-28.

Shuttle service: On April 13, bus routes begin to the Bryce Amphitheater area of the park. The reservation-only Rainbow Bus Tour showcasing southern park views also starts up the same day. They're free but riders must pay the park's entrance fee. Vehicles longer than 20 feet won't be allowed in amphitheater parking during shuttle hours.

Food: The park's lodge will open March 23 for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Valhalla Pizzeria and the park's coffee shop next door will open May 15 from 6 a.m. to 10 pm. Trail snacks, groceries and showers are available at the General Store at Sunrise Point.

Camping: Starting in June, the park's Sunset and North campgrounds will close for paving, so reservations can only be made through May.

Parking: Other construction projects will briefly affect parking areas near the visitor's center and lodge during the season.

Bryce hosts Canyon 2 Canyon bike ride and Fly-In and Car Show

Summer is coming to an end. Before it is officially over, travelers can take one last weekend adventure to Bryce Canyon Country for the fifth annual Fly-in and Car Show and the second annual Canyon 2 Canyon bike ride. Both events take place Aug. 25 and kick off the evening of Aug. 24. with an outdoor movie.
The Bryce Canyon Fly-In and Car Show starts at 11 a.m. at the Bryce Canyon Airport, located at 450 N. Airport Road in Bryce. Car check-in is at 10 a.m., with most of the activities taking place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include viewing anywhere from 30 to 50 vintage cars, exploring the airport and seeing warbirds, watching the static plane displays, enjoying music, and indulging in food from various vendors.
The location to register for the Canyon 2 Canyon Bike Ride will be at the grass area next to the Bryce Canyon Shuttle Station, located at 165 S. Main St. at 6:50 a.m. Registration is free and includes a T-shirt, raffle card and prizes. Bike riders can choose to ride from three different starting places: Inspiration Point inside Bryce Canyon, Ruby’s Inn and the top of Red Canyon. Bikes are also available to rent at the Sinclair Station. The show also includes drawings and giveaways. Some of the prizes include a camping package and a car-show package along with items such as camping chairs, lounge chairs, canopies, and a camp chef.
Before the car show starts, visitors can experience the red-rock beauty of southern Utah firsthand while riding a bike at the Canyon 2 Canyon Bike Ride. Hosted by Bryce Canyon City and the Bryce Canyon Natural History Association, the bike event starts in Bryce Canyon National Park at Inspiration Point and goes for 17 miles, ending in Red Canyon.
Ruby’s Inn will provide shuttles with trailers to take riders and their bikes to each of the three starting places and pick up from Red Canyon. The first shuttle leaves at 7:00 a.m. and runs every 20 minutes, until noon when the last shuttle will pick bikers up in Red Canyon. Bikers that start at Inspiration Point need to purchase a park pass, which can be bought at the Bryce Canyon Shuttle Station. The closing ceremonies for the bike ride will be at 12:30 p.m.
“Those who come to the Fly-In and Car Show always seem to love it,” said Tye Ramsay, manager at Bryce Canyon Airport. “The show is the perfect family-friendly event. This year’s show will be even better as we have teamed up with Bryce Canyon City’s Canyon 2 Canyon Bike Ride to provide an entire weekend of fun.”
In the evening, when both events are over, visitors can head over to Ruby’s Inn to enjoy the Car Show and Shine that starts at 7 p.m. and the Balloon Glow that starts at 8:30 p.m. The airport will provide a free shuttle to and from the airport and the hotel. On Aug. 24 before the biking event, Best Western Plus Ruby’s lnn will show a movie on the front lawn.

Highway 12 back open after flooding

Highway 12 in Garfield County was briefly closed Thursday after heavy rain and flooding in the area.
Utah Department of Transportation responded to clear the road of mud and debris.
County officials said delays are expected, but there is no need for travelers to reroute or reschedule their plans.
Visitors can still make it to Bryce Canyon National Park. The area was deemed safe and the sheriff’s office said it is getting cars through as quickly as it can.

Bryce Canyon National Park Prepares for Summer Visitation and Construction

Visitation is beginning to pick up at Bryce Canyon National Park as seasonal facilities reopen, hours are extended, and construction projects are scheduled to begin.

Trail access is still limited by unstable winter conditions that inhibit the park’s ability to respond to emergencies. For visitor safety, hiking is only permitted along the Rim Trail between Inspiration and Fairyland Points, and the Mossy Cave Trail. The park is making regular assessments of conditions, and hopes to make additional areas accessible as soon as possible. Check the Alerts section of the park’s webpage at nps.gov/brca for the most current conditions. Meanwhile, plow crews are currently working to reopen the park’s southern scenic drive beyond Mile 3, and are hopeful to restore access in April. At present, viewpoints are open as far south as Bryce Point, while Paria and Fairyland Roads remain unplowed for winter activities. Snow has also limited the available number of campsites within Loop A of North Campground, which is kept open in winter. Additional campsites will be opened as conditions allow.

The park Visitor Center and Bookstore is currently open from 8 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., and will extend its hours to 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 28th.

The Bryce Canyon Shuttle will begin its service to the Bryce Amphitheater area of the park on Friday, April 12th. Riding the shuttle bus is free, but requires payment of the park’s entrance fee. Shuttles will run from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily, with hours extending by an hour on May 8th. Twice-daily trips to the park’s southern views on the Rainbow Bus Tour will resume on April 12th, if the southern scenic drive is accessible. This 3 ½ hour tour is free, but requires reservations, so inquire at the Shuttle Station in Bryce Canyon City or by calling (435) 834-5290. A reminder that during shuttle hours vehicles over 20 feet are restricted from the Bryce Amphitheater parking areas (Sunrise, Sunset, Inspiration, and Bryce Points), so be sure to take advantage of this service to see some of the park’s most iconic areas.

Lodging within the park is currently available at the Sunset Motel. The Sunrise Motel will reopen March 29th along with the Lodge at Bryce Canyon, which will open at 11:00 a.m. for lunch and dinner, and continue to offer full breakfast, lunch and dinner options for the season. Reservations can be made by visiting brycecanyonforever.com or by calling Forever Resorts at (435) 834-8700. Valhalla Pizzeria and Coffee Shop will open on May 24th, and will provide dining options from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Those looking for trail snacks, groceries, a penny machine, or showers can head over to the General Store at Sunrise Point, currently open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with hours extending to 8 p.m. later in the season.

2019 Construction
Due to construction, camping will be limited in 2019. Paving of Sunset and North Campground roads is tentatively scheduled to begin in early May. Sunset Campground will close first and then reopen, then North Campground will close. During paving operations, all campsites in the park will be first-come-first-serve. Reservations will be made available on a campground-by-campground basis as construction is completed. Visit recreation.gov for current reservation availability.

Repaving of the Bryce Lodge parking lot is scheduled to begin in May, while reconstruction of the Visitor Center parking lot will begin at the end of July. Be prepared for alternative parking arrangements at these locations. Construction is also planned for walkways at Inspiration and Rainbow Points. Short-term closures can be expected at Rainbow Point, though access to Yovimpa Point will remain open. Impacts of these construction projects will be mitigated as much as possible, but visitors should be prepared for possible noise and traffic interruptions.

Ranger programs, including daily geology talks, guided walks, and astronomy programs will be offered as the season unfolds. Program times and dates are posted on the calendar page of the park’s website. Popular annual festivals, including the park’s Astronomy Festival, scheduled from June 26th – June 29th, and the Geology Festival, scheduled from July 26th – July 27th, are not to be missed. Both events will feature guest speakers, special ranger-guided activities, and opportunities for the entire family to enjoy learning about the unique resources protected within Bryce Canyon National Park.

Bryce Canyon even more magnificent in wintertime

Bryce Canyon National Park is an extraordinary place any time of year, but in winter it’s even more magnificent, not to mention more affordable.
While the park is called a canyon, it is actually made up of 12 natural amphitheaters on the eastern escarpment of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southwestern Utah.
In these natural steep and wide gullies there are spires and pinnacles of red, orange and pink limestone that have been carved into fantastic shapes by frost wedging. This form of erosion takes place during the 200 or so days of winter when temperatures alternate between freezing and thawing.
Thawing allows water to fill cracks in the rock; it freezes that night and wedges the crack a little wider. Eventually, a piece of rock will fall away.
The remaining shapes suggest grotesque living beings. To some imaginations they seemed scary and thus were named “hoodoos.”
Most visitors come from late spring to fall, but if you go in winter, you’ll have added treats. With snow, the hoodoos’ colors seem more vibrant and you can cross-country ski, snowshoe and take part in other winter activities. Winter lodging rates are cheaper, and you won’t encounter crowds at the overlooks or on trails.
The average snowfall in both January and February is 17 inches with March receiving about 15 inches. Elevations in the park range from 8,000 to 9,115 feet. In January and February, expect average high temperatures in the 30s, dipping into the mid-teens overnight. But temperatures can be much colder. On a couple of occasions, I’ve experienced overnight lows here in the minus-20s.
The park has a 7.4-magnitude night sky, which means on a clear, moonless night you could see 7,500 stars. On a clear day, from many of the viewpoints, you can see about 100 miles.
The 35th annual Bryce Canyon Winter Festival will take place on Presidents Day weekend, Feb. 15 to 17. This event features free clinics, demonstrations, tours and ranger programs, both indoors and outdoors, with some suitable for all ages. Highlights include ski and archery clinics and serious competitions, such as an archery biathlon and cross-country ski races. Some others are just for fun, such as the Kids’ Snow Boot Races.
Most of the festival takes place in or around Ruby’s Inn just outside the park’s entrance, but there are a few great programs in the park itself, such as stargazing with telescopes and geology talks. The visitor center is the place to start any Bryce Canyon outing. Its exhibits include geology, wildlife and prehistoric culture, and there is a fine book and gift store. Be sure to inquire about trail conditions, pick up some maps or learn about the winter ranger programs.
These include, weather permitting, the Bryce Canyon Snowshoe Program, a ranger-guided outing to introduce the winter wonders of the park. This usually lasts about two hours, and they will also outfit you with snowshoes and poles. You must provide your own snow boots or waterproof hiking boots, gloves, hats and appropriate winter clothing.
While the park is open 24/7 year-round, the visitor center is open daily 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended hours spring through fall. It is closed Christmas and New Year’s days. Contact the Bryce Canyon Visitor Center at 435-834-5322 or visit nps.gov/brca.

Scenic Byway 12 near Bryce Canyon National Park to be renovated in road work project

The road to Bryce Canyon National Park is about to get a major renovation to increase safety and mobility on Scenic Byway 12 in Garfield County.
Construction by the Utah Department of Transportation began on Monday. One-and-one-quarter mile of the road which will be renovated is in Bryce Canyon National Park.
"The project will provide improved access for vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians through a better-defined corridor built within the context of park and regional needs," the project website said.
This follows a February 2017 landslide on the road, and UDOT hopes this will bring further stability to the area. Both UDOT and the National Park Service cooperated to assess the best way to ensure the longevity of the road into the future.
Development of intersections, tunnels, pavement, striping, signs, shoulder and guard rail are all included in the renovation. A westbound climbing lane will also be added to help reduce speed conflicts and provide passing opportunities on a steep curvy grade where driver visibility is limited, a UDOT press release said.
In its entirety, the project is projected to cost more than $8 million.
UDOT said, "much of the excavation, drainage and earthwork will take place during the fall months with paving, final road striping and barrier work to be finished under proper temperatures next spring."
During this next year, people should plan for single-lane closures and up to 15-minute delays during the day. Residents can expect noise, dust and vibrations.
Construction is scheduled through July 2021.

Heavy rain leads to road closures at Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef parks

Amid severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings in south-central Utah, two national parks have closed roads that became impassible due to mud and debris slides.
Continued rain and thunderstorms are likely on Saturday afternoon in Bryce Canyon National Park, according to parks officials.
Rock and mudslides prompted officials to close The Queen's Garden Trail, both sides of the Navajo Loop, and the road to Bryce Point (which is closed at Paria View junction). As of 4:43 p.m., the road to Bryce Point had been cleared and reopened. The other two roads remained closed as of this report.
In Capitol Reef National Park, officials reported all roads in the Cathedral Valley were impassible due to deep mud and flooded sections of the road.
