  • Get off the Beaten Path at Petrified Forest National Park

    Zitat

Did you know Petrified Forest National Park offers a chance for visitors to explore areas within the park that are considered “off the beaten path”? These hiking excursions get you away from the park road and crowded trails, taking you through areas of spectacular scenery, geological wonders and fields of wild grasslands and petrified wood.

What started in 2014 as an opportunity to give visitors access to new areas of the park has expanded into eight Off the Beaten Path guides that visitors can request in the visitor centers. The guides provide a suggested route through and to specific locations within the park. Some of the hikes follow old roadbeds, relics from a time when the park allowed vehicles to drive through the petrified wood deposits, while others take visitors into the wild badlands of the painted desert. One of the hikes follows the remains of a trail constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The hikes vary in distance and difficulty with the shortest being four miles and the longest eight and half.

The hikes are available year-round though weather and moisture can make it more difficult to cross washes and riverbeds. If hiking in warm weather, it is recommended that you start early and bring plenty of water. Several times per year the park offers the opportunity to join a ranger on some of these adventures. Check the website for dates and times or call 928-524-6228 ext. 238.

As with all areas within the park these are protected spaces. The park thanks visitors for practicing leave no trace and leaving everything as they found it.

    About national historic sites

There are 1004 national historic sites in Canada, located in every Canadian province and territory. 171 of these are administered by Parks Canada.

National historic sites can be found in almost any setting, from rural and urban to wilderness; they may be sacred spaces, archaeological sites, battlefields, heritage houses, historic districts, places of scientific discovery, and much more.

These sites allow us to learn more about Canadian history, including the diverse cultural communities who make up Canada, and the history and culture of Indigenous peoples.

  • Fort Pulaski National Monument Continues 100th Anniversary Year with Siege Day 2024

    Zitat

On Saturday April 6, 2024, Fort Pulaski National Monument will continue hundredth anniversary celebrations with Siege Day, a day of programming and cannon firings commemorating the 162nd anniversary of the Battle of Fort Pulaski.

Join park staff on Saturday April 6, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for a day of programs centered on the siege and battle of Fort Pulaski. Free fort tours will run from the Fort Pulaski National Monument Visitor Center (101 Fort Pulaski Road, Savannah GA 31410) beginning at 10:00 AM and continuing throughout the day. Cannon demonstrations will also take place inside of Fort Pulaski. Standard entry fees to Fort Pulaski National Monument will apply on April 6, 2024.

Built originally by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to defend the port of Savannah, Fort Pulaski became the site of a pathbreaking wartime experiment during the American Civil War. A 30-hour bombardment, beginning on April 10, 1862, allowed United States Army troops on Tybee Island to use a variety of artillery, including rifled cannon, to breach Fort Pulaski’s thick masonry walls, walls that were previously considered impenetrable.

Fort Pulaski National Monument is located on U.S. Highway 80, 15 miles east of Savannah.
