  • 10 Best Scenic Drives Through National Parks Across the U.S. for Highlights and Stunning Views

    Zitat

When visiting the country’s national parks, a road trip is often the best way to start. Nature lovers with more time to explore may want to immerse themselves in the landscape by hiking, camping, and engaging in other outdoor pursuits, while others prefer to take in their beauty and timelessness in a more relaxed way.

A scenic drive helps you get the lay of the land and enables you to cover more ground so you can hit several must-see highlights. The parks are usually pretty remote, though, so make sure you have enough gas, check the spare tire, load up on maps, and plan your outing with these tips. And always be sure to check the road’s status before you depart—some may only be open seasonally depending on the weather, and temporary closures due to damage or road work do happen from time to time.

Here are 10 of the best U.S. national parks to drive through.

  • Hōlei Sea Arch Collapses in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

    Zitat

The iconic Hōlei Sea Arch in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has collapsed into the Pacific Ocean, marking the latest transformation of the park’s remote and rugged coastline.

Visitors are urged to stay back from the unstable coastal cliff edges which drop off vertically into the ocean and present a serious falling hazard. Photos on social media show people entering the closed area near where the sea arch once stood, putting themselves and first responders at great risk of falling and drowning off the rough, wave-swept coast.

The 90-foot Hōlei Sea Arch was still standing on Wednesday, September 23 but had collapsed by Sunday night, September 27. The exact time of the collapse is unknown and could have occurred when the park was temporarily closed during Tropical Storm Nolo.

The coastline flanking the sea arch has shown signs of instability for years. Earthquakes during the 2018 Kīlauea eruption and summit collapse damaged the cliffs near the arch and in January 2020, new cracks and instability prompted the park to close the original viewing area. A safer viewing area further from the cliff edge opened in March 2020. Later that year, massive surf from Tropical Storm Darby broke off a chunk of rock from the lower part of the arch.

Visitors are required to stay out of closed areas and away from cliff edges which are unstable and can collapse without warning.

  • Chiricahua National Monument Becomes America’s Newest National Park

    Zitat

Chiricahua National Monument is now Chiricahua National Park, following President Donald J. Trump's signing of the Chiricahua National Park Act into law on October 20. The redesignation recognizes the national significance of the area's extraordinary natural and cultural resources and marks a new chapter for one of Arizona's most distinctive landscapes.

“Chiricahua’s towering rock spires, rich Apache heritage and remarkable biodiversity make it one of America’s most extraordinary landscapes,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. “This new designation will shine a national spotlight on one of Arizona’s hidden gems, creating opportunities to welcome more visitors, strengthen local economies and share this incredible landscape with more Americans.”

Located in the southeastern corner of Arizona, the park protects a landscape of towering rhyolite rock spires and balanced rocks formed by an ancient volcanic eruption roughly 27 million years ago. Rising from the “sky island” of the Chiricahua Mountains, where desert, grassland, and forest ecosystems meet, the area supports remarkable biodiversity and provides opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, birding and stargazing.

“Chiricahua has been part of the National Park System for more than a century, and this new designation marks an exciting chapter in its history,” said Jessica Bowron, Comptroller Exercising the Delegated Authority of the Director of the National Park Service. “While its name is changing, our commitment remains the same: protecting this remarkable landscape and its cultural heritage while providing opportunities for visitors to experience and enjoy it for generations to come.”

First protected as a national monument in 1924, Chiricahua preserves thousands of years of human history, including its importance as the homeland of the Chiricahua Apache and its legacy of early homesteading families at Faraway Ranch. The redesignation reflects the national significance of the area’s natural and cultural resources and the longstanding efforts to conserve them.
