Did You Know South Dakota Is Home To One Of The Oldest National Parks In The US?

Let’s be real for a second here: South Dakota isn’t exactly the most-visited state in the country. It’s one of the northernmost spots in the nation, and all too often, it gets overlooked in favor of other more popular Midwestern states. However, this is truly a tragedy, as it means that there are an enormous amount of people out there who have never experienced what this amazing place has to offer. Take, for example, a breathtaking natural wonder located just 10 miles north of the small town of Hot Springs. This is easily one of my favorite places, and much to our (as in all of South Dakota’s) pride and joy, it’s one of the oldest National Parks in the U.S.

Upon first arrival, the park appears as stunningly beautiful, rolling prairie with endless blue skies above and countless wonders down below.

It's actually the largest natural mixed grass prairie left on the planet, and that's not all. From here, one would never guess that underneath their feet lies the very first cave to be designated a National Park in the world... and plenty of wonders within.

Wind Cave National Park was established in January of 1903 by then-president Teddy Roosevelt, who notably had a soft spot in his heart for both Dakotas.

It came as the sixth National Park in the US, and today, it's an astonishing look at the incredible processes that take place deep (and I mean DEEP) within the earth.

Well, it's currently the seventh-longest cave in the world, with 154.2 miles of known, charted passages (as of the last survey in 2021, anyway... it could easily be more by now).

Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Lakeview Drive road construction project to conclude this spring

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with funding from the Great American Outdoors Act Legacy Restoration Fund, will finish the approximate $15.7 million repair and rehabilitation of Lakeview Drive that started last year. Work will begin April 8 and is expected to end in early July.

Noland Creek Bridge will be closed April 15 to April 18 while crews repair the bridge deck. Parking will be available at Noland Creek trailhead during the closure. Noland Creek cemetery will also be accessible.

The work is part of a parkwide Great American Outdoors Act project to rehabilitate Lakeview Drive, Newfound Gap Road, Heintooga Ridge Road and Balsam Mountain Campground Road.

Japan to donate 250 new cherry blossom trees to U.S.

Japan will donate 250 new cherry blossom trees to the United States, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at his welcome ceremony at the White House on Wednesday.

Some 3,700 cherry blossom trees at the Tidal Basin that were donated by the city of Tokyo in 1912 are a symbol of the friendship between Japan and the United States.

A senior U.S. official said that "the two most important gifts that countries have given the United States over the course of our existence: one would be the Statue of Liberty, and the second might be the gift, 110 years ago from Japan, of the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin."

The U.S. National Park Service last month said that 158 of the cherry trees will be cut down to reconstruct a seawall around the Tidal Basin.

Kishida said, "When I heard that some of the trees would be replaced...I decided to send 250 new cherry trees to commemorate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States."

U.S. President Joe Biden said the new trees will be planted near the Martin Luther King Memorial. "Like our friendship, these trees are timeless, inspiring, and thriving," he stated.

First Strike Festival at Old Slater Mill – 200 Year Anniversary

Pawtucket, Rhode Island— On Saturday, May 11, 2024, the public is invited to the First Strike Festival at Old Slater Mill in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Come for a day of live music, history, and family friendly fun. Hosted at 67 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI, from 12:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M. This is a free event.

In 1824, one hundred women weavers walked out of textile mills in the village of Pawtucket, beginning the first industrial labor strike in United States history. The National Park Service commemorates this strike with an annual festival, now in its third year. All are invited to see new mini exhibits in honor of the 200th anniversary of this event, to tour the historic mill, and to spend the day enjoying the grounds at Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark. Bring a blanket and picnic, play old time games, and relax with performances from singers, songwriters, and dancers.

Pawtucket-based singer-songwriter J. Michael Graham will serve as the MC for First Strike. He will be followed by the award-winning singer Kim Moberg, whose set will begin at 12:30 P.M. Students from the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Pawtucket, RI) will follow Moberg with a dance inspired by the 1824 women strikers at 1:30 P.M. The Mystic Garland Dancers will perform at 2:00 P.M. and rally the audience for a May Pole Dance. Connecticut State Troubadour Kala Farnham will perform at 2:45 P.M. Don’t miss live spinning demonstrations and other outdoor fun throughout the day.

Throughout the day, park rangers will offer free tours and labor history talks inside and outside of Slater Mill. Tours of the mill (limited to 25 persons) will be offered at 10:30 A.M, 12:30 P.M., and 2:30 P.M. Visitors are also encouraged to listen to a Labor History Talk with a ranger (offered on the hour, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 P.M.) or hear a longer open-air presentation about the 1824 strike at 11:30 A.M. or 3:30 P.M. All are encouraged to check out partner tables with staff from the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, Everyday Anthropology, Wedges of Time, RI Labor History Society, RI Spinners Guild, and the URI Master Gardeners.

In US-Nationalpark in Wyoming: Grizzly-Mutter greift Veteranen beim Wandern an

Er sei für eine Wanderung im Nationalpark Grand Teton in Wyoming gewesen, teilte der Tierfotograf Shayne Patrick Burke auf Instagram mit. Doch dann habe er ein Grizzly-Junges entdeckt und kurz darauf habe ihn eine Bärin angegriffen. Wie der Veteran den Angriff überlebt hat, schildern wir hier.

Der Tierfotograf und Veteran Shayne Patrick Burke hatte sich kurz zuvor von seiner Frau verabschiedet, um weiter im Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming wandern zu gehen, als ihn ein „wirklich unangenehmes Gefühl“ überkam, wie der 35-Jährige auf Instagram schrieb. Instinktiv habe er begonnen, Äste zu zerbrechen, zu singen und laute Selbstgespräche zu führen, weil das helfen könne, Überraschungs­angriffe von Braunbären zu verhindern.

Dann bemerkte der ehemalige Soldat ein Bärenjunges, das in etwa 50 Metern Entfernung den Hügel hinauflief, während er durch den Wald des 310.000 Hektar großen Parks wanderte, wie die US-Zeitung „New York Post“ schrieb. „Ich wusste, dass das nicht gut war“, schrieb Burke – und sah die Grizzly-Mutter schon auf sich zulaufen. Er habe daraufhin versucht, den Bären mit seinem Bärenspray abzuwehren, doch der Grizzly sei zu schnell gewesen.

Als die Bärin ihn ansprang, habe er sich umgedreht: „Ich entschied mich, ihr meinen Rücken zuzuwenden, und legte mich in Bauchlage.“ Um seinen Nacken zu schützen, verschränkte der Tierfotograf seine Hände hinter dem Nacken. Der Grizzly habe daraufhin in seine rechte Schulter gebissen und darauf geschlagen, ihn dann auf den Rücken gedreht und mehrfach in seine Beine gebissen. „Leider“ habe er daraufhin wieder geschrien und die Aufmerksamkeit der Bärin auf seinen Kopf gelenkt, woraufhin sie auch in seinen Hals biss.

Dann die Rettung: Burke hielt noch immer die Dose mit dem Bärenspray in den Händen, auf die die Bärin zeitgleich biss. „Das Spray explodierte in ihrem Mund“, schilderte Burke die Situation; daraufhin ließ der Grizzly von ihm ab und lief zurück zu seinem Jungen. Noch in der Lage, sich selbst zu helfen, schrieb der Veteran seiner Frau eine Nachricht und rief einen Rettungs­hubschrauber.

Doch auch das Warten auf Rettung war nicht sicher für Burke; der Bär hätte jederzeit zurückkommen können, er konnte nicht gehen, und der Rettungs­hubschrauber hatte Schwierigkeiten, seinen genauen Standort zu finden. „In diesem Moment habe ich auf diesem kleinen Hügel akzeptiert, dass ich sehr gut hätte sterben können“, schreibt der 35-Jährige und berichtet von einem Video, das er aufgenommen und in dem er seinen Freunden und seiner Familie gesagt habe, dass er sie liebt.

Kurz darauf wurde der Tierfotograf gefunden und anschließend operiert. Er erwarte, wieder vollständig gesund zu werden – aber das sei „die gewalttätigste Erfahrung seines Lebens“ gewesen. Und dennoch respektiere und liebe er Wildtiere, schreibt Burke. Er sei zur falschen Zeit am falschen Ort gewesen, der Grizzly habe bloß sein Junges verteidigt.

Mitarbeiter des Nationalparks bestätigten den Angriff im Gespräch mit der „New York Post“. Da die Grizzly-Population in Wyoming zuletzt gewachsen ist, gibt es immer mehr Angriffe dieser Art.

Rocky Mountain National Park: Trail Ridge Road Opens For The Season Timed Entry Permit Reservations Required For Trail Ridge Road 9 am to 2 pm

Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park is open for the season. Due to melting snow on the road and the potential for freezing temperatures visitors should be prepared for icy conditions. At this time, nightly closures will not be implemented. However, because weather conditions may change rapidly at higher elevations, park visitors should be prepared to adjust travel plans accordingly at any time and are encouraged to call the park’s Trail Ridge Road recorded status phone line at (970) 586-1222. Park staff will update the recorded line when/if the road status changes.

Alpine Visitor Center, Trail Ridge Store and the large adjacent parking area are closed to all uses. Visitors must adhere to the barricades. Visitors entering the closure area will be cited.

Timed Entry Permit Reservations In Place

There are two types of reservations available. One option is for the Bear Lake Road Corridor, which includes the entire corridor and rest of the park. This reservation period is from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Another timed-entry option is for the rest of Rocky Mountain National Park, excluding the Bear Lake Road corridor, and includes Trail Ridge Road. This reservation period is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Permits issued using the reservation system will allow park visitors to enter the park within two-hour windows of availability. Trail Ridge Road historically opens on Memorial Day weekend; last year the road opened on May 26. The earliest the road has opened was on May 7, 2002; the latest June 26, 1943. Trail Ridge Road is the highest continuous paved road in the United States, climbs to 12,183 feet and connects the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. Trail Ridge Road officially closed for the season last year on October 18.

National Park Service plow operators began clearing the snow in the middle of April. Crews from the west side of the park and crews from the east side of the park move along the road and eventually meet at the Alpine Visitor Center. The visitor center is the highest in the National Park Service, sitting at 11,796 feet above sea level. Spring storms often impact plowing activities. This year, May storms with significant winds at higher elevations hampered snow plowing operations this year. Plow operators have encountered additional snow accumulation, significant wind resulting in deep snow drifts, freezing cold temperatures and ice.

Devils Postpile National Monument:

Reds Meadow opens June 7

Inyo National Forest, Devils Postpile National Monument, and partner agencies managing the Reds Meadow Road Reconstruction Project are on target for the summer 2024 schedule starting Friday, June 7.

A Forest Order is in place closing the road Monday through Thursday, while keeping it open Friday through Sunday. During holiday weekends, there are extended public access hours (see schedule chart below). Vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian access is prohibited whenever the road is closed.

The mandatory ESTA Shuttle Bus (Eastern Sierra Transit Authority) from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for public access will still be in effect. Personal vehicles will be permitted outside of these times, as is normally.

One exception to the below schedule is on opening day June 7, and the following Friday June 14, the road will open at 7:00 a.m. instead of 9:00 a.m. This is due to the contractors not needing to move heavy equipment the night prior on these two particular days.

Devils Postpile National Monument will open to the public on June 7 and will provide regularly scheduled public programs on weekends while Reds Meadow Road is open to the public. The campground at the Monument has been closed to the public since 2016 and will remain closed this year.

“We are looking forward to another summer, offering weekend programs and educational opportunities,” said Rebecca Carr Wong, Superintendent of Devils Postpile National Monument.

Safety Guidelines During Lake Powell’s Spring Runoff

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is pleased to announce that snowpack in the headwaters of the Colorado River and its tributaries is resulting in a spring runoff that is positively affecting Lake Powell water levels for the 2024 summer boating season. Rapidly rising water levels in Lake Powell also require increased attention to important safety measures.

Use caution when anchoring your vessel or parking your vehicle, since during spring runoff lake levels can rise up to two feet per day and result in rapid changes to the shoreline. Property left near the shoreline can quickly become submerged in mud and/or water. Depending on the grade of land, a foot of water rising vertically will cover approximately 30 to 50 feet of land horizontally. Visitors should park 300 to 400 feet away from water's edge, as a week-long visitor’s vehicle could be inundated (depending on the inflow of water and location). While boating, always approach the shore with caution and watch for shallows and submerged debris. Boat operators need to use extreme caution while navigating the lake, as large debris may be present. Boaters are advised to follow the main channel buoys which mark good water. Crossing over may result in accidents due to water barely covering shelves, such as at Buoy 94 near Stanton Creek. Find additional safety information on our website.

Please be aware that due to many dynamic factors affecting Lake Powell’s water elevations, it is not possible to know when a specific water level will be reached. Please be sure to check the park’s Changing Lake Levels webpage for the status of lake levels and Lake Powell boat ramps and marina services, prior to heading to the lake. As of June 5, Lake Powell's elevation was 3571.83 feet Above Sea Level (ASL). Lake Powell's daily elevations are also posted by the US Bureau of Reclamation and the Lake Powell Water Database.

Ein Paradies für Hippies

Der äußerste Westen von Texas steckt voller Skurrilitäten. Die Nähe zu Mexiko, die Einsamkeit der Chihuahua Wüste sowie die bizarre Felslandschaft des Big Bend Nationalparks ziehen Aussteiger, Abenteurer und Künstler an.

In der Geisterstadt Terlingua schunkeln langhaarige Althippies im plüschigen Starlight Theatre zu Countrymusik. Die Gräber auf dem Friedhof sind mit leeren Bierflaschen dekoriert, und im Hotel hängen Ölschinken mit Karl-May-Szenen in Stuckrahmen: Terlingua nahe dem Big-Bend-Nationalpark, das sich selbst Ghost Town nennt, ist ein Sammelbecken für sämtliche Verrücktheiten, die der Westen von Texas bereithält.

Im Grenzgebiet zu Mexiko, weit weg vom Zeitgeist der Metropolen, treffen sich freiheitsliebende Individualisten, Künstler auf der Suche nach Inspiration und Naturfreaks, die nachts Sterne am Himmel sehen wollen. „Wir sind hier weit weg von allem“, sagt Andrew, der in Terlingua in einem Zelt schläft und seinen Lebensunterhalt mit Paddeltouren auf dem Rio Grande verdient. Er ist ein Outdoor-Freak und findet in Terlingua den Lifestyle, der zu ihm passt. Ebenso wie all die anderen Aussteiger, die hier wohnen und sich ihren bescheidenen Lebensunterhalt damit verdienen, Touristen an Ziplines zu hängen oder mit ihnen Pferdeausritte zu unternehmen.

Weit weg von allem ist man auch im Big-Bend-Nationalpark, dem artenreichsten der USA, in dem Schwarzbären, Berglöwen und Pumas zu Hause sind. Der Park schmiegt sich in eine große Flussschleife des Rio Grande, der die Grenze zu Mexiko bildet. „Wir sind von mexikanischem Gebiet umrundet. Von hier aus geht es nirgendwo weiter, höchstens zu Fuß oder mit dem Paddelboot über den Fluss ins Nachbarland“, sagt Tom Vandenberg, Chef des Besucherzentrums im Big-Bend-Nationalpark. „Die Leute kommen her, um absolute Ruhe, die weite Landschaft und nachts den spektakulären Sternenhimmel zu erleben.“ Big Bend mit seinen von Kakteen gesprenkelten Wüstenebenen, den schroffen Canyons, dem träge dahinfließenden Rio Grande und den bizarren Chisos Mountains ist ein Eldorado für Wanderer. Mehr als 200 Kilometer ausgewiesene Wege gibt es im Park. Lohnenswert ist etwa der Lost Mine Trail. Nach kurzem, mäßig anstrengendem Aufstieg durch lichten Kiefern- und Wacholderwald belohnt ein 360-Grad-Panoramablick auf den tief eingeschnittenen Pine Canyon und die Sierra del Carmen in Mexiko.

Ein Muss im Big-Bend-Nationalpark ist der Besuch der Chisos Mountains, eines Gebirgszugs, der wie eine riesige Felsenburg mit zahllosen Wehrtürmen bis fast 2400 Meter abrupt aus der Wüstenlandschaft ragt. Die Serpentinenstraße nach oben schlängelt sich zwischen bizarren Steinformationen hindurch, die poliert von Wind und Wetter im Sonnenlicht glänzen. Die schönste Jahreszeit im Big-Bend-Nationalpark ist der Winter mit kühlen Temperaturen, aber einem glasklaren Himmel, der sich wie ein Gewölbe aus Aquamarin über Berge und Wüste spannt. Im Sommer ist Vorsicht geboten. Das Thermometer steigt weit über vierzig Grad Celsius. Dann stehen Tom Vandenberg die Sorgenfalten auf der Stirn. „Viele ungeübte Wanderer unterschätzen die Hitze ebenso wie die extrem trockene Luft und nehmen viel zu wenig Wasser mit. Ich muss immer wieder Suchtrupps losschicken, um verirrte und entkräftete Parkbesucher aufspüren zu lassen.“ Von den Berglöwen und Schwarzbären drohe jedoch keine Gefahr, sagt Vandenberg. Die Löwen seien sehr scheu, und „die Bären machen hier immer nur ihre Bärensachen“.

Wer auf seinem Roadtrip den Big-Bend-Nationalpark besucht, lernt zwangsläufig die verrückte Seite im Westen von Texas kennen. Rund um den Nationalpark und den angrenzenden Big Bend Ranch State Park finden sich kleine Örtchen, die sich so einige Skurrilitäten leisten. Neben Terlingua mit den bizarr dekorierten Friedhofsgräbern hält auch das 75-Seelen-Dorf Lajitas eine Überraschung parat. Zum Bürgermeister wird hier traditionell eine Ziege gewählt. Direkt neben dem Lajitas General Store, dem einzigen Shop des Ortes, trifft man auf Clay Henry III., den aktuellen Ziegen-Bürgermeister, der dort gemeinsam mit seiner Ziegen-Gattin lebt und durch die Gitter seines geräumigen Geheges schaut – recht blasiert, so als wüsste er um sein hohes Amt.

Hauptort in der Big-Bend-Region ist Alpine. Man sei die „größte Stadt im größten Landkreis im größten Bundesstaat der USA“, so lautet die Eigenwerbung. Alpine hat 6000 Einwohner. Denen wird allerdings einiges geboten: Street-Art-Künstler haben das Stadtbild mit zahlreichen Wandgemälden verziert, es gibt Galerien, das Museum of the Big Bend mit einer Landkartensammlung und das historische Holland Hotel, in dem früher die Eisenbahnmitarbeiter in Stockbetten nächtigten. Das war praktisch, denn die Unterkunft liegt direkt an der Eisenbahnlinie, die Alpine durchschneidet. Nachts donnert auch heute regelmäßig ein Zug durch den kleinen Ort, trötet laut und bringt den Boden zum Schwingen. In den Hotels liegen Ohrstöpsel bereit. Ansonsten hat Alpine die gleichen Vorzüge wie die Nachbarörtchen im Brewster County: Die Luft ist klar, der Himmel blau und weit und nachts schimmern am rabenschwarzen Firmament Abermillionen von Sternen, die sich in einem glitzernden Band zur Milchstraße formen.

Und dann ist da natürlich Marfa – ein Miniörtchen mitten in der sandigen Ödnis der Chihuahua-Wüste. In der Ferne schimmern die Chinati-Berge, Staub weht durch die Straßen. Die trockenen Grasflächen sind mit Sotol-Agaven und borstigen Ocotillo-Büschen getupft. Nennt man Marfa in der internationalen Kunstwelt – sei es New York, Paris oder Berlin –, leuchten die Augen von Künstlern, Kunstliebhabern und Galeristen. Dreh- und Angelpunkt ihres Interesses ist ein Museum. Dort, wo früher die US-Armee stationiert war, zeigt heute die Chinati Foundation in dreißig Baracken moderne Kunst. Gewidmet ist das international bedeutende Museum ihrem Gründer, dem 1994 verstorbenen Donald Judd.

Der Minimalist war zu Beginn der Siebzigerjahre aus New York nach Marfa gezogen, um in der Weite der Wüste Inspiration zu finden und seine Ideen von Kunst und Architektur zu verwirklichen. Wer als unbedarfter Besucher heute durch Marfa schlendert, ist zunächst ein wenig ratlos. Die Geschäfte bieten Tarotkarten, Yogamatten und Cowboyhüte – doch die meisten Läden sind geschlossen und öffnen offenbar nur nach Lust und Laune. Ebenso wie die Restaurants und Cafés, die „Do your thing“, „Lost Horse Saloon“ oder „Buddha Bakery“ heißen.

Glück hat man meist im „The Sentinel Marfa Coffee Shop“. Dort trifft man auch auf Mary Etherington. Die elegant gekleidete Dame mit einer gewagten Haartolle ist bei der örtlichen Wochenzeitung „The Big Bend Sentinel“ beschäftigt und wie die meisten Marfa-Bewohner der Kunst zugeneigt. Zu Lebzeiten von Donald Judd sei dies ein wahrer Ort der Kreativität gewesen, abgeschieden, inspirierend und auf die Kunst fokussiert, meint sie. Auch heute noch spüre man den Spirit, doch es kämen immer mehr Menschen, die auf laute Partys aus seien und Marfa vor allem auf ihrer Hipster-Bucket-Liste abhaken wollen. Doch die aktuelle Kunstszene trifft sich weiterhin in Marfa. Das wird klar, wenn man im „The Sentinal Marfa Coffee Shop“ auf Mitarbeiter der Berliner Galerie Max Hetzler trifft. Das renommierte Kunsthaus betreibt Dependancen in Paris, London – und in Marfa. Wer die Ausstellungsräume mit angeschlossener Künstlerwohnung in dem Wüstenörtchen besuchen will, fährt von Downtown Marfa zwei Kilometer über eine Staubpiste ins Nirgendwo und durchquert dann ein Tor mit der Aufschrift „The Space between Thoughts“ – „Der Raum zwischen den Gedanken“.

Schon früher zog es die Prominenz in diese karge Gegend. Sogar die Hollywoodstars James Dean und Elizabeth Taylor haben bereits Marfa-Luft geschnuppert. Sie standen hier im Jahr 1955 für die Außenaufnahmen des Klassikers „Giganten“ vor der Kamera und nächtigten im „Hotel Paisano“ im Ortszentrum. Einige Meilen nördlich erinnern überdimensionale Pappkulissen mit den Protagonisten an den Filmdreh. Die fotogene Installation mitten in der Wüste zieht immer wieder reichweitenstarke Influencer auf der Suche nach ikonischen Bildmotiven an. Nicht weit entfernt machen sie weitere Foto-Beute. Hier steht ein Shop der Nobelmarke Prada mitten im Sand, direkt an der staubigen Landstraße. Der Great-Smoky-Mountains-Nationalpark liegt in den Appalachen auf dem Gebiet der US-Bundesstaaten North Carolina und Tennessee. Er wurde am 15. Juni 1934 eingerichtet und gehört heute zum Weltnaturerbe. Der Wald, der den Park bedeckt, gehört zu den ältesten Wäldern der Erde und ist das größte Urwaldgebiet im Osten der USA.

Der Park ist mit acht bis zehn Millionen Besuchern pro Jahr der meistbesuchte Nationalpark in den USA, trotzdem beschränkt sich der Verkehr auf die größeren Straßen. Die 450 Kilometer Straße abseits der Hauptwege und die 1400 Kilometer Wanderwege des Parks sind verhältnismäßig wenig frequentiert. Der Park wurde nach dem gleichnamigen Gebirgszug Great Smoky Mountains benannt, in dem er sich befindet.

Glacier National Park’s Popular Going-to-the-Sun Road Is Fully Open for Summer — but You’ll Need a Reservation

A popular road at Montana's Glacier National Park has fully reopened, allowing travelers to once again explore by car.

The Going-to-the-Sun Road fully opened over the weekend for the 2024 summer season, enabling travelers to drive over Logan Pass from both the West Glacier and St. Mary entrances, according to the National Park Service. With that also comes vehicle reservations, which are required when entering from the west side from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day through Sept. 8.

“Road crews battled avalanches and deep snow levels above 5,500 ft this year, and facilities staff worked against freezing temperatures to get the water system operational,” the NPS wrote in a statement, adding, “While driving along the road, particularly through the Rim Rock area… visitors should be aware of potential rockfall and should not slow down or stop in this section. Rocks and other debris continue to fall throughout the summer, requiring daily clean up. With the level of snow at Logan Pass, visitors should use extreme caution and refrain from crossing snowfields or standing under snow overhangs.”

To enter the road from the west side of the park past Apgar, travelers must make vehicle reservations for all cars and motorcycles online at Recreation.gov. Vehicle reservations will not be required to enter the Going-to-the-Sun Road from the east side at the St. Mary entrance.

Reservations are also not required for park goers who already have reservations for lodging, camping, or tours.

In addition, vehicle reservations are currently required for the North Fork and will be required at Many Glacier starting July 1.

Going-to-the-Sun Road takes travelers over Logan Pass, which peaks at 6,646 feet. Without stopping, it takes about 2 hours to drive the full 50 miles. Along the way, travelers can see mountain goats and bighorn sheep as well as grizzly bears.

Biden-Harris Administration Establishes Blackwell School National Historic Site as America’s Newest National Park

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland today formally established Blackwell School National Historic Site in Texas as the nation’s newest national park. The park is the seventh national park unit designated under President Biden. Recent additions include the designation of Amache National Historic Site in Colorado, the Emmett Till and Mamie Till-Mobley National Monument in Illinois and Mississippi, and Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park in Kansas.

Written by prejudice rather than law, the story of the Blackwell School is one of “separate but equal” education for Mexican and Mexican American citizens of Marfa, Texas. Built in 1909, the school serves as a significant example of how racism and cultural disparity dominated education and social systems in the United States during this period of de facto segregation from 1889 to 1965. The designation permanently protects the site and helps tell the history of Texas school districts that established separate elementary schools for Mexican American children.

“Today’s designation of the Blackwell School as our nation’s newest national park ensures that the rich history and cultural heritage of this significant place is preserved for future generations,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “This site is a powerful reminder of our nation’s diverse and often complex journey toward equality and justice. By honoring the legacy of Blackwell School, we recognize the resilience and contributions of the Latino community in our shared history.”

“A complete history of America must include everyone’s story. The designation of the Blackwell School National Historic Site is an important step in telling a more diverse and inclusive history of the Mexican American experience in our country,” said Director of the National Park Service Chuck Sams. “We are grateful for the dedicated efforts of many to save and share the story of the Blackwell School and its students in order to honor the alumni, family members and Hispanic communities affected by these practices.”

“President Biden and Vice President Harris are committed to preserving and protecting sites that lift up communities that have historically been left out of our national story,” said White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Brenda Mallory. “By establishing this new national park under President Biden’s leadership, the National Park Service is further demonstrating this Administration’s commitment to protecting places that help tell a more complete and inclusive story of our nation’s history.”

The park was authorized by the Blackwell School National Historic Site Act, signed by President Biden in October 2022. The bipartisan legislation directed the National Park Service to work with the Marfa Independent School District and City of Marfa, Texas, and other partners to acquire the land necessary for today’s official establishment of the park.

Today, the Blackwell School consists of the original 1909 adobe schoolhouse and a smaller 1927 classroom building known as the Band Hall. The buildings contain photographs, memorabilia, and interpretive panels that feature quotes and stories from students and teachers.

Today’s announcement is the result of support and contributions from the Blackwell School Alliance, National Parks Conservation Association, National Park Foundation, Marfa Independent School District, and City of Marfa. The site is currently open to the public with limited hours and services. The Blackwell School Alliance, a local non-profit founded by Blackwell School alumni for the purpose of saving the school, is partnering with NPS to provide visitor services at the site.
