Mudslides Close Part of Highway 101 in California
ZitatThe death toll in the mudslides that buried parts of Montecito, Calif., in muck and boulders has risen to 20, officials said on Sunday, and portions of Highway 101 will remain closed indefinitely.
“No one could have planned for the size and scope of what a 200-year storm, immediately following our largest wildfire, would bring,” Eric Peterson, the chief of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, said at a news conference on Saturday.
Road crews are working 12-hour shifts to reopen the highways, said Jim Shivers, a spokesman for the California Department of Transportation, known as Caltrans.Highway 101, a major artery on the Central Coast used by up to 79,000 vehicles per day, is closed for a stretch of about seven miles from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara, Mr. Shivers said in an email on Sunday.
The highway is also closed to northbound traffic for about 11 miles from State Route 150 to the city of Santa Barbara.

Juhu,

Kollegin ist dort vor 2 Wochen langefahren. Sind wohl irgendwo nach Lucia abgebogen.
Hat nix weiter dazu berichtet, also wohl nix besonderes.Schönsten Abschnitt konnten sie aber somit sehen.

Hwy. 1 closure that cut off Big Sur has an estimated reopening date
ZitatCaltrans announced Monday that it has a target date for reopening Highway 1 at the site of the massive Mud Creek Slide: mid-September.
But that's not exact.
"Caltrans will continuously evaluate the opening date as work progresses," spokeswoman Susana Cruz said in an email. She said the next update would be given in July.
And even after the highway reopens, some intermittent lane closures and roadwork could continue, Cruz said.Highway 1 has been closed in various places from Ragged Point to Big Sur since December 2016, but a mega-slide on May 20 significantly worsened the condition of the Mud Creek area — millions of cubic yards of material slid down into the sea and created an additional 15 acres of coastline about 9 miles north of the Monterey County line.
Since then, Caltrans has been working to construct a new highway over the top of the slide, burying the old road under tons of dirt.
The question of when the road will reopen through the area has been a complicated one, with weather conditions and geologic hazards from continual slides playing a primary role.Earlier in April, Cambria Chamber of Commerce President Mel McColloch sent an email to members, noting "major progress" on the highway.
"The slides are still moving several inches per day, so it is still difficult to project a highway opening date," he wrote at the time.
To make sure the new road is stabilized, it will include new safety features such as embankments, berms, rocks and netting, Cruz said in her email.
"This strategy is allowing Caltrans to rebuild the road more quickly and at a lower cost than other alternatives such as structures, a tunnel or major earthwork that puts additional fill into the ocean," she wrote.Noch ein Link:

Pacific Coast Highway near Big Sur to reopen in July
ZitatCalifornia transportation officials have targeted July for reopening an iconic stretch of Highway 1 in the scenic Big Sur coastal region that was blocked last year by a massive landslide.
The road that connects Los Angeles to San Francisco was projected to open in mid-September but the California Department of Transportation announced Tuesday it will open to all travelers by the end of July.
“Rebuilding Highway 1 and restoring traffic along the Big Sur coast has been our priority and by opening the highway sooner than expected, it will boost the many central coast communities affected by this major landslide,” said Richard Rosales, an acting district director.
Highway 1 has been dogged by slides since December 2016, but the one that hit in May 2017 was monumental. Millions of tons of earth moved, displacing 75 acres of land.
The debris slid well out into the ocean, creating 15 acres of new coastline about 9 miles north of the Monterey-San Luis Obispo county line.
The transportation department has since been working to stabilize the slide to rebuild the highway over it. The $54 million project included building a massive rock seawall at the foot of the slide.
This strategy is allowing roadway rebuilding more quickly and at a lower cost than other alternatives such as structures, a tunnel or major earthwork that puts additional fill into the ocean, the transportation department said.
The work is being done about 25 miles south of where another segment of the highway was blocked when a storm-spawned landslide wrecked a bridge in early 2017.
Last October, a replacement span designed without support columns was opened that could be vulnerable to future slides.Drone Offers Bird's-Eye View of Work on California Hwy. 1 at Mud Creek Slide

Pacific Coast Highway reopens this month and now we know exactly when that's happening
ZitatSave the date if you're heading up north for the summer and want to take one of California's most scenic routes.
Caltrans announced that the Pacific Coast Highway is reopening 11 a.m. July 20 near Big Sur, where the road has been shut down since last year following a massive mudslide.
The traffic agency recently announced the road would reopen by the end of July, but a few days ago it revealed a specific date. The reopening will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at an area inn.
“Mud Creek is the last closure point so travelers will be able to take Highway 1 all the way through Big Sur for the first time in 18 months," Caltrans Director Laurie Berman said in a statement.
The Mud Creek landslide shut down the road north of Cambria in May 2017. More than 6 million cubic yards of material fell onto Highway 1 and into the ocean, creating 15 additional acres of coastline.
Crews worked 24 hours a day to clear the area impacted by the landslide and the opening is happening two months ahead of schedule, according to Caltrans.
The effort cost $54 million. -

California’s Highway 1 near Big Sur reopens after collapse
ZitatA section of California’s scenic Highway 1 near Big Sur that collapsed during a winter storm reopened to traffic Friday.
Gov. Gavin Newsom and work crews stood on the freshly paved and marked roadway to celebrate the reopening of the main artery to and from Big Sur, which attracts millions of tourists who visit the famous coastal region each year.
“There are few, if any, more iconic routes than Highway 1 — not just in California but anywhere in the world. What this road means to the local economy, to the people of this region and to all Californians is invaluable,” Newsom said. “As we rebuild, we do so with the knowledge that the conditions that washed out this section of roadway will become more common in the future. We must fortify our infrastructure with climate resiliency in mind.”
The slide occurred about two miles south of Big Sur’s Esalen Institute, blocking northbound coastal travelers from such Central Coast sites as Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Nepenthe restaurant and Big Sur Campground & Cabins.
The highway has been closed since Jan. 28, when heavy rain unleashed torrents of mud and debris left over from a wildfire, washing a 150-foot chunk of roadway into the sea.
Storms in 2017 caused slides that closed off Big Sur for more than a year.
This time, crews began to fill the canyon below with compacted dirt in early March. They worked nearly 12-hour shifts, seven days a week, and were able to restore the roadway nearly two months ahead of schedule, aided by dry weather and increasingly longer days, the California Department of Transportation said.
After its reopening, crews will replace the main drainage system above the fixed roadway to help withstand future debris flows, rising sea levels and coastal erosion, Caltrans said. They will also work on landscaping and installing guardrails throughout the early summer.
The work was estimated to cost $11.5 million, the agency said. -
